How does maxmillions work for lotto max?

Okay I know that maxmillions are only available once the jackpot hits 50 million. Do you need to play the $1 extra to be elligable for maxmillions? Or say your 7 numbers were drawn in a maxmillions draw and you didn't play the extra... do you still win the $1 million dollar prize?
