How phobic is our society?

I am a straight guy and I often get called gay because I support gay rights. I recently watched Bruno which I thought was hilarious because Sacha pokes fun at all the s out there. But when I got out of the movie I was surprised at all the people who completely missed the point. A lot of people thought Sacha was making fun of gay people and they didn't understand how he was attacking prejudice in America and other westernized countries. I used to think we were making real progress towards equality, am I wrong?
